Dear Virginia Lewis and Clark Legacy Trail Followers and Friends,

Wow! Another long hiatus since the last post from the VLCLT, Inc. Regardless, here’s a shout-out to new followers and existing ones, all who have been very patient.

On behalf of the VLCLT, Inc., we are announcing the recent approval of two new VLCLT, Inc. historical markers by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources: “Field Brothers: Lewis and Clark Expedition;” and “Lewis and Clark on the Great Road.” We hope to soon share the text about the Field Brothers of Culpeper County, Virginia and their valuable contributions to the Expedition. Text regarding the significant history of Virginia’s Great Road as a major pathway for the travels of Lewis and Clark in/through Virginia and a likely linkage to the stately William King House in downtown Abingdon can be found in the above 3/25/24 Hoof Prints post. Future historical marker applications are in the works and we will keep you informed.

Why the long time since the last post? As another by-product of the Covid years, some companies that fabricate historical markers were impacted, causing a backlog of future historical markers in their queues.

Congratulations to the Museum of Culpeper History in Culpeper, Virginia, and those who helped write the DHR application on behalf of their native Field Brothers; and likewise to the town of Abingdon, the owners of the William King House, and to VLCLT, Inc. volunteers who produced the DHR application on behalf of the William King House – Virginia Great Road. Many thanks for your patience during the longer than usual process from the application submittal date and receiving the finished historical marker with Lewis and Clark plaque. And best wishes to both localities as they plan and implement marker unveiling and installation ceremonies. As the old saying goes, “Anything worth having is worth waiting for.”
